Red Wine Stains: A Handy Carpet Cleaning Guide
Red wine can be a lovely thing, but not when it’s spilled on the carpet. That’s when wine moves from the “delightful” category to the “nightmare” category.
Thankfully, Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning has a great way to get rid of it using normal cleaning solutions you can find at home. Let’s take a look!
Like with almost any spot, but especially red wine stains, it’s key to blot up as much of it as fast as you can. Work around the outside of the spot towards the middle with a towel. This should help you avoid spreading the stain further.
Also, be sure you aren’t scrubbing with your towel. Scrubbing can spread stains but blotting contains them.
In a bowl, mix a cup of hydrogen peroxide with about a teaspoon of a colorless dish soap. Wearing gloves, wet a sponge in it, wring it until it’s damp, and then blot the spot.*
As before, work around the outside edge to the middle. It’s important to regularly rinse out the sponge with water as you work and then re-dampen it with the solution. If you don’t, you’ll end up spreading the wine around.
Keep going until you aren’t pulling up any more wine.
In a bowl, mix a cup of cold water with a couple (2-6) drops of a colorless dish soap. Mix the solution, pour it into a bottle, and spray the problem area until it’s damp. Next, blot the area dry.
Clean out the sprayer and then fill it with warm water. Spray the area until it’s damp. Next, blot the area dry.
Feel the carpet after this to make sure there’s no soapy residue. If there is, repeat this step until the carpet is residue free.
Lay a towel – a thick one – over the damp area and lay weights on top. After a few hours, the towel should have absorbed most of the remaining water, so you can remove it.
And there you are – a straightforward carpet stain cleaning tip but certainly a handy one. Now, if the stain is particularly big or has been in the carpet for a while, remember that Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning is always here to help.

*Always test any cleaning product on an inconspicuous spot first – this is very important with Hydrogen Peroxide. It can lighten carpet dyes, so test to make sure yours will be safe.
We don’t recommend using this method if you have a carpet made of wool or other natural fibers.
