How to Remove Coffee Stains: A Step-by-Step Method

It’s always best to act fast when it comes to cleaning up stains in carpets—and coffee stains are no exception. Letting the stain dry in the carpet pile makes it harder to remove. Regardless of whether your coffee stain is still wet and fresh or has had a chance to dry and set in, you should be able to handle it by following the simple process outlined in the steps below.

Step 1: Blot the Spot

If the stain is still wet, start by blotting the area with dry, white towels or cloths (never scrub the area, as this can spread the stain). Start at the edges of the stain and work your way inward so the coffee doesn’t spread into the surrounding area. Continue blotting until no more coffee transfers onto your white towels.

If the stain is set and dry, start by lightly wetting the stain with warm water first, then blot the area with dry, white towels. You can continue to wet the stain and blot the spot until, once again, no more coffee transfers onto your towel.

If there’s still a stain on your carpet, move on to the following steps.

Step 2: Make the Cleaning Solution

In a bowl, mix together one tablespoon of liquid dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water, then stir the mixture together. When it comes to coffee stains, this simple homemade blend is often just as effective as more expensive commercial products.

Before using this or any other carpet cleaning solution, apply a tiny spot to an inconspicuous part of your carpet—just to make sure it doesn’t cause any adverse or unwanted effects.

Step 3: Treat the Stain

Dip a clean towel or cloth into your new cleaning solution, then use this towel to blot the stain, working the solution into the stain from the edges towards the center. Do not, however, oversaturate the spot with too much solution—you don’t want it to seep down into the padding beneath the carpet pile. Once there is some solution worked into the spot, give it a minute or two to dwell and begin breaking down the stain.

From there, alternate between using more of these lightly treated towels and dry, fresh towels, continuing to blot the spot as needed until the stain has been removed from the carpet fibers. [Note: if the coffee contained cream or sugar, you’ll likely need to move on to optional step 4 to fully remove the stain.]

Optional Step 4: Remove Cream and Sugar

Cream or sugar in the coffee stain adds an extra hurdle in the process—but you should be able to clear up these sticky elements as well. Mix together one capful of enzyme laundry detergent with one cup of warm water, then stir them together. As in step 3, alternate between using towels dipped in this solution and dry, fresh towels to blot up the last of the stain. And don’t forget to test this solution on an inconspicuous spot on the carpet first! It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Step 5: Rinse and Dry

Now that you’ve blotted up the coffee stain, simply rinse the carpet with cool water to help clear up any lingering residues. Blot up as much of the water as you can with dry towels, then let the carpet finish drying naturally. If you’ve got a fan on hand, let it blow over the carpet to speed up the drying process.
