Get Longer Use Out Of Your Carpet With These Five Easy Tips

Carpet is one of the most popular flooring choices in the US — and for good reason. It's soft and plush, and it feels good to walk on! But all that walking around can cause it to get dirty and wear out really fast. So how can you get longer use out of your carpet while still enjoying it? Follow these five easy carpet cleaning tips!

Tip One: Make Better Choices Before Your Carpet Is Installed

If you like shopping, this tip shouldn't be hard. Before installing carpet in your home, make sure to find a color and texture that will fit your needs. For instance, if you have young children, it's a given that your carpet is going to get stained, so go for a dark-colored carpet. If you want lighter colored carpet but entertain often, choose an off-white shade such as sand, tan, or beige that will hide dirt and stains better than pure white carpet. Stain resistant carpet is also available in many beautiful colors. While a bit more expensive than regular carpet, it can definitely pay for itself when installed in kids' rooms, living rooms, and other high-traffic areas.

Tip Two: Avoid Putting Carpet In High-Traffic Areas

If you don't want to pay the higher cost of stain-resistant carpet (or if you can't find any colors or designs that you like) forgo carpet all together in high traffic areas. By putting tile or rugs in entryways or the kitchen, you avoid worrying about staining the carpet all together.

Tip Three: Vacuum Five Minutes A Day

Vacuuming every day sounds tedious, and even the phrase “vacuum regularly” sounds like a never-ending task. But if you vacuum a different area of your home for just five minutes a day, you can manage to keep all of your carpet vacuumed regularly on a consistent basis. This doesn't just make the carpet look cleaner, but it also removes allergens from your home and keeps the fibers of your carpet stronger as they won't be continually covered with grime and dirt.

Tip Four: Ask Guest To Remove Their Shoes

This may seem awkward or rude at first, but asking guests to remove their shoes when they visit will really reduce wear and tear on your carpet. If they're regular guests in your home they surely won't mind, and you can even keep a pair of slippers or flip-flops specifically for them at your home. If you're having a big party, consider giving out cheap flip-flops as party favors. No one will mind changing shoes when they get a free pair out of it.

Tip Five: Regularly Have Your Carpet Cleaned Professionally

Even the most immaculate homes need to have their carpets professionally cleaned from time to time. By having professional carpet cleaning services done on your home 2-3 times a year, you can ensure that old stains are thoroughly removed, and you'll definitely extend the lifespan of your carpet.

By following these five tips and spending just five minutes a day on vacuuming you can not only keep your carpet a lot longer, but it will always look great — an extra perk for when unexpected guests stop by. Put a little love into your carpet and it will return the favor with a much longer lifetime.
