CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA - Chris Souk of Oxi Fresh of Greater Charlotte and the Carolinas was recently featured in the National Veteran-Owned Business Association's Vetrepreneur Magazine. In the article, Chris talks about how being a veteran has helped him run a successful business.
Chris served in the Army Reserve as a Specialist from 1991 to 1996, after which he spent time working on the construction of luxury yachts before spending 10 years in the financial services sector. During those years, Chris realized something.
Quite honestly, he told Vetrepreneur, I got tired of working for someone else. I thought, we all have to earn our living in one way or another, so why not be my own boss?
Chris began investigating his career options and discovered an opportunity close to home. His brother, Frank Souk, had a franchise with Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning. When visiting him, said Chris, he took me out on a few jobs and demonstrated the process. Oxi Fresh specializes in low-moisture cleanings that use the power of oxygen to clean, something which impressed Chris.
After seeing the system in action and looking into the companys model, he decided to join up with Oxi Fresh. In 2009, he opened a franchise that services Charlotte and the surrounding areas; since then, he has become one of Oxi Freshs most successful franchisees.
Part of the reason behind his success, at least according to Chris Souk himself, is that theres a strong alignment between veterans and franchising. Just like the military, franchisees are given systems and best practices to follow in order to maximize success. Implementing systems is a key responsibility in the military and that aspect translates to the franchise world.
Kris Antolak, the Director of Franchise Development at Oxi Fresh, agrees with Chris, adding that, Veterans embody commitment. When they served, they served with purpose, direction, and a focus on being the best they could be. They also have experience following and implementing plans while still incorporating personal initiative. Its that last quality that helps make them exceptional franchisees.
