Tips For Getting Pet Hair Off Furniture and Upholstery
If you have pets you keep inside, you already know just how much they can shed, especially in Summer. You also know how this hair can form a death grip on your furniture and upholstery. It can get so bad that it looks like your furniture is made of pet hair – but what can you do about it? The stuff is annoyingly stubborn. Sure, you could just throw a sheet over the furniture and let your pets crawl all over that, but then you don’t get to see your beautiful furniture. In order to help you out, we put together some tips for getting pet hair off of your upholstery.
Fabric Softener
Prior to attempting to remove the pet hair, combine a mixture of half water and half fabric softener in a spray bottle and spray the mixture over the piece. The fabric softener will loosen the hair’s hold on the fabric and allow for considerably easier removal. Just make sure the fabric on your furniture is water safe before spraying it with the fabric softener mixture (for example, don’t spray leather or suede). To check to see if you can use this tip, look at the tag on the furniture. If it says dry clean only, don’t spray it with this solution.
Tape
This is Hair Removal 101. Use shipping tape to remove pet hair from your furniture, as its stickier than normal tape and will last longer. Wrap your hand with the shipping tape (sticky side out) and press the shipping tape against the furniture with the pet hair on it. Once the tape is completely covered with hair and no stickiness remains, wrap a fresh piece of tape around your hand and continue.
Rubber Gloves
Here’s an alternate and highly effective method. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and run your hands over the furniture. The rubber will form a static charge that will attract the pet hair and draw it off of the upholstery. Once your glove gets too hairy, clean it off and repeat the process until the hair is gone.
Hand Vacuum
There are many hand vacuums on the market designed specifically to pick up pet hair; they can be especially effective when coupled with other methods, like the fabric softener mixture spray. Be sure to clean the filter of the hand vacuum on a regular basis for maximum suction.
Hire Professionals
When all else fails, it’s time to call in the big guns. Find a professional carpet cleaning company that cleans upholstery and hire them. These carpet cleaning companies will often have special techniques and tools they use for removing pet hair from upholstery.
