The Spotlight: Red Wine Spills

Categories: Carpet Cleaning Tips

red wine is poured

Red wine. It’s wonderful when it stays in the glass, but when it takes a tumbling trip to the carpet, wine quickly becomes everyone’s least favorite thing.

Don’t worry – this method will help you tackle that tricky spot.

Step 1
:
Take a clean towel and blot up as much of the wine as possible, working from the outside edge toward the center. Make sure you blot the spot; don’t scrub it as that will only spread the stain around.

Step 2:
Mix together a teaspoon of dish soap (colorless preferably) and a cup of hydrogen peroxide. Wet a sponge or towel in the solution and wring it out until it’s damp.

Step 3
:
Blot at the spot with the sponge/towel. As you work on the stain, be sure to rinse the sponge/towel out and re-moisten it with the cleaning solution. Repeat this process until no more of the spot comes up.*

Step 4:
Mix two to six drops of dish detergent to one cup of cold water, put it in a spray bottle and spritz the spot.*

Step 5:
Blot the area with a towel until dry.

Step 6
:
Spritz the spot with warm water until damp.

Step 7
:
Blot the area with a towel until dry.

Step 8
:
Place a thick towel over the spot and set a heavy weight on top of it. Let the towel sit there for a few hours to absorb any remaining residue.

Step 9
:
Remove the towel and vacuum the area.

*Before you start using a cleaning solution, always test it on an inconspicuous area of the carpet – this is especially important with Hydrogen Peroxide, as it can lighten carpets. You’ll also want to be very careful if you have a carpet made of natural fibers.

Apply the solution to the carpet, wait 30-60 seconds, and then blot with a clean towel to make sure there’s no color-loss or damage. Spritz the area with water and blot dry.
