Happy Holid . . . No Don’t Spill That!

It’s the end of the year and that means colder weather, holiday get-togethers, and lots of guests. While having friends and family visit can be great, trying to keep your home and carpets clean with all those guests is less fun. Having lots of people moving around with lots of food is enough to put any carpet-conscious person on edge.

But don’t worry! With these four simple tips, you can keep your carpets safe during the holidays.

1. Have a “No Shoes” Rule
It sounds simple, but have your guests remove their shoes when they come inside. Since it’s shoes that pick up the lion’s share of dirt and debris, taking them off will protect your carpets floor from bits of leafs, mud, water, and snow.

Just make sure you have a place to put all those shoes!

2. Use Door Mats
If “no-shoes” is a no-go because you have too many guests (or guests who are too attached to their shoes), get a good doormat. Of course, a doormat is only helpful if people use it; be sure to gently remind your guests to use it as they come in.

If you’re planning on having any outdoor games, put down doormats wherever the players will be coming in and out of the home.

3. Use Area Rugs and Runners
If you’ll be having lots of guests (and lots of kids especially), it can be worth investing in some low-cost area rugs and runners. Put these rugs in areas that are going to see lots of use or are at high-risk for spills, like the living room, under the kid’s table, or hallways that everyone will be using.

You can often find these inexpensive carpets at large hardware stores, discount home stores, and overstock stores.

4. Handle Spills Right Away
Even if you’re really careful, there’s always a chance that a clumsy cousin or messy kid may drop their plate or knock over their punch. If that happens, act fast! Letting a spill sit or just doing a partial cleaning means it will set further into the carpet.

It’s best to quickly look up a treatment method (check our blog – we have tons of tips), and tackle the spot right away. This might not be very fun, but you’ll get the best cleaning results this way.

By following these tips, you should be able to keep your carpets as clean as you can this holiday season.
